‘Wooden' doors for drinking water production building

Drinking water company Vitens has replaced its old production location Van Heek with a new one, which will enable to produce more and softer drinking water. The building is fully equipped with wooden roof and wall cladding so that it fits in with the natural environment. The doors in the outer façade that where supplied by Merford merge into the building through their wooden cladding.

The new drinking water production company Van Heek in Zeddam produces 3.75 million cubic litres of water annually and supplies 70,000 residents of the municipality of Montferland and the surrounding area with softened tap water.

Wooden casing

The sustainable new building was designed by Rooding Architects. Because a kind of wooden casing has been pulled around the building, it blends in with the natural environment. Characteristic of the design is the shape with its many angles. Behind the wooden casing is a concrete filter building where a pump cellar, two clean water cellars, electrical rooms and an office section are located.

The steel entrance and escape doors in the façade, supplied by Merford, have been fitted into the design by means of wooden cladding. The technical realisation of this was carried out in close consultation with the architect. The doors are burglar-resistant (resistance class 3) and sound-insulating in the NSA area. Merford also supplied plug-in ventilation grids for this room. The access doors are partly equipped with access control. Two watertight doors were supplied in the pump room that provide access to the clean water cellars.
