Acoustic and Ventilation Solutions for Transformer Station Upgrade in Gennep

To support the growing demand for electricity in the region, Enexis — the regional grid operator — has upgraded its transformer station in Gennep. Two 40MVA transformers were replaced by more powerful 80/100MVA units. As part of this upgrade, Merford implemented advanced acoustic and ventilation measures to help minimize noise impact on the surrounding residential area.

Enabling Growth Through Grid Expansion

The decision to upgrade the transformer station was driven by structural congestion in the Gennep area. With electricity demand on the rise, the existing infrastructure needed reinforcement. The new transformers not only provide increased capacity for future growth but also improve the ability to manage peaks in energy fed back into the grid — largely due to locally generated renewable energy.

Preventing Noise Disturbance in the Neighborhood

To ensure nearby residents are not affected by increased noise levels, Enexis commissioned an acoustic study carried out by Peutz, an engineering and consultancy firm. Based on their recommendations, Merford engineered, manufactured, and installed a range of noise-reduction and ventilation solutions:

Merford’s Contribution to a Quieter Energy Transition

Merford plays an active role in the energy transition by helping grid operators and transformer manufacturers reduce the noise impact of decentralized power installations. Our acoustic solutions support compliance with noise regulations and improve the livability of areas surrounding new infrastructure.

  • Façade Replacement with SKS100 Panels The original concrete façades in front of the transformer cells were replaced with SKS100 acoustic panels. These sound-insulating walls consist of modular panels with a closed exterior and sound-absorbing interior, made from Sendzimir galvanized steel filled with high-performance acoustic material.

  •
  • Ventilation System Silencers Ventilation inlets and outlets were upgraded with IXKA silencers and outdoor grilles. These components ensure effective airflow while reducing noise emissions — improving comfort for both residents and maintenance personnel.

  •
  • Soundproof External Doors Two M53 single-leaf external doors were installed, each equipped with anti-resonance and insulation materials. These doors offer both sound insulation and emergency exit functionality.

'Before we started the project, we sat down with local residents to discuss our plans. They had a say in several aspects — for example, the building color. While blue is the standard, we switched to green at their request. I fully supported that choice; it helps the buildings blend into the natural surroundings.' — Ron Pollaart, Enexis
