Designing healthy environments

Acoustic comfort starts with smart building design

Every space within a building has its own function and corresponding acoustic requirements. Adjacent spaces often serve different functions, making it important to prevent noise disturbance.

Building acoustics focuses on isolating and blocking sound, from room to room, from inside to outside and vice versa. Good room acoustics, or the control of reverberation time and reflections, ensures a comfortable sounding space.

Installation noise arises from the interaction between technical installations and the structural construction. Controlling noise and vibrations is therefore important. An effective acoustic design requires an integrated approach.

Merford supports architects, engineers and contractors in creating comfortable and future-proof buildings, where acoustic comfort is an essential part of healthy living and working.

Acoustic comfort in every type of building

Create comfortable spaces and environments by effectively controlling noise

The approach to improving acoustic comfort varies depending on the type of building and the type of sound.

  • To reduce airborne noise (such as speech or music) and impact noise (such as footsteps) between spaces.
  • To ensure sound insulation in apartment buildings, offices, theatres, and schools.
  • To control reflections and reverberation in spaces such as meeting rooms, restaurants, and sports halls.
  • To find a good balance between ventilation and sound insulation in noise-exposed environments.

From design to realisation

Collaboration at every stage

Design phase

The building function and acoustic requirements are assessed based on relevant standards and building regulations. In this phase, the performance requirements for aspects such as insulation, impact noise and reverberation are defined, forming the basis for the appropriate acoustic approach.

Specification phase

In close collaboration with the architect, we review the measures from the acoustic report. These are then included in the building specifications and detailed in the drawings. In this way, the measures and their associated technical specifications are clearly incorporated into the design.

Construction phase

Working alongside the contractor, we check that all selected materials and assemblies align with the specified acoustic and airtightness requirements. Our practical guidance ensures that acoustic performance is safeguarded throughout the build.

Realisation phase

During installation, the acoustic solutions are integrated into the building. Correct application and decoupling are essential to achieve the intended results. Merford provides clear instructions and support to ensure that the realised performance matches the design expectations.

Can I also purchase insulation products from you, or do you only provide consultancy services?

Yes, you can. Merford supplies a wide range of acoustic materials and systems in addition to consultancy. You can find an overview of our products on our website.

How can acoustic comfort be improved in existing buildings?

It starts with understanding the source of the noise. Once identified, solutions such as wall or ceiling insulation, vibration isolation or acoustic panels can significantly improve comfort. Merford provides practical advice and tailor-made materials for both small upgrades and full renovations.

Do you work exclusively on new projects, or do you also take on renovation projects?

No, we work on both. Renovation projects often require bespoke and smart solutions, especially when it comes to insulation, acoustics or improving comfort in existing buildings. We’re happy to help enhance acoustic performance without compromising design or functionality.

What regulations or standards apply to impact and airborne sound insulation?

In the Netherlands, the Building Decree (Bouwbesluit 2012) applies. It sets minimum performance requirements for both airborne and impact sound insulation in residential and non-residential buildings. Merford helps interpret and meet these standards effectively.
