Optimal sound control for a landmark venue

For over 50 years, Rotterdam Ahoy has been the Netherlands’ leading event venue, hosting everything from small local trade fairs to major international concerts. After last year’s postponement, one of the world’s largest annual music events can finally take place: the Eurovision Song Contest.

The recently opened Rotterdam Ahoy Convention Centre features 35 conference halls, the RTM Stage concert hall with a capacity of up to 7,000 visitors, and spacious foyers and exhibition areas. The RTM Stage can be transformed into the largest theatre in the Netherlands, accommodating up to 4,000 seats.

The challenge was clear: how to enable large-scale events without disturbing the surrounding neighbourhood. The solution was the application of Akoestiplex MXR250 on both the steel roof of the foyer and the concrete roof of the RTM Stage, ensuring high levels of sound insulation.

Collaborating with leading acoustic experts

A project of this scale required specialist expertise. Peutz, acting on behalf of the municipality of Rotterdam, and LBP|SIGHT, representing the construction consortium Ballast Nedam / Heijmans, provided acoustic consultancy. A detailed preliminary study, including on-site measurements from a comparable project, confirmed the suitability of the Akoestiplex MXR250 system.

The acoustic roofing system from Akoestikon is specifically designed for flat roofs and provides effective sound insulation, protecting the local community without compromising functionality or architectural design. The system enables high-energy events to take place without causing noise disturbance outside the venue.

Ready for the future of events

The new Convention Centre strengthens Rotterdam’s position in both the events and conference markets. Small-scale events have already taken place successfully, and the RTM Stage is prepared for upcoming concerts following the Eurovision Song Contest. Residents benefit from a well-insulated roof system that provides peace and comfort, while the venue continues to host world-class events.

The project demonstrates how technical requirements, acoustic performance and urban living can be successfully combined.
