The demountable design ensures accessibility for inspection and maintenance while maintaining acoustic performance.
East Anglia THREE, Offshore Wind Project - Siemens Energy.

Expanding offshore wind requires controlled acoustics

Large-scale offshore wind projects require robust and reliable onshore infrastructure. East Anglia THREE is the second offshore wind farm in the East Anglia region and forms part of the wider East Anglia Hub for Scottish Power Renewables.

The wind farm is located approximately 69 km off the coast of Suffolk. The generated electricity is transported onshore via cable routes to a converter station in Bramford, where it is connected to the existing National Grid substation.

Siemens Energy is responsible for the delivery of the HVDC converter stations. Within this infrastructure, it was essential to enclose the three transformers to control noise emissions while maintaining accessibility and operational reliability.

Turnkey SKS enclosures through close collaboration

In collaboration with Siemens Energy, Merford UK delivered a turnkey solution for the design, manufacture and installation of demountable SKS acoustic enclosures.

The enclosures house three transformers and include:

  • Acoustic and structural engineering
  • Fabrication of demountable SKS enclosures
  • Full installation on site

The demountable design ensures easy access for inspection and maintenance while maintaining acoustic performance. The project builds on the successful collaboration with Siemens Energy on the Viking Link HVDC Interconnector, which led to additional projects in noise control within the energy sector.

Supporting renewable energy with engineered noise control

With the SKS enclosures in place, the transformers operate within a controlled acoustic environment, reducing noise impact while maintaining operational efficiency.

This project demonstrates how acoustic engineering forms an integral part of modern renewable energy infrastructure. By combining design, fabrication and installation within a single integrated approach, Merford delivers solutions that are reliable, future-ready and tailored to the operational environment.

Behind the project

Design and manufacturing of very high quality. On-site works executed well and according to schedule. I would highly recommend for other interconnector or substation works.
