Living alongside a busy motorway requires smart solutions. For the new Canvas Living development in Rotterdam, we designed custom-made façade grilles that let fresh air in while keeping traffic noise out. This creates a healthy and comfortable living environment right in the heart of the city.
Safety doors for NBC Congress Centre

Silence and style in the renovated NBC Congress Centre
The NBC Congress Centre in Nieuwegein underwent a major renovation following the severe fire in September 2022. More than ninety per cent of the building suffered smoke and water damage, particularly in the oldest section. The damage exposed outdated areas with low ceilings and narrow circulation spaces. A redesign was clearly required to place hospitality and quality at the centre once again.
Merford was involved in the reopening project, delivering solutions that were functional, safe and fully aligned with the renewed concept of the building. NBC’s vision was clear: to create a future-ready environment combining modern technology, sustainable choices and effective acoustic control.
The art of doors, insulation and acoustics
Merford delivered 36 doors combining acoustic insulation with fire resistance, burglar resistance and emergency escape functionality. Due to the proximity of residential areas, Akoestikon insulation solutions and the Akoestiplex MXR250 system were applied, improving acoustics and reducing noise impact.
The doors were finished in black instead of the traditional white, matching the interior design by Studio Hugo. Integrated LED lighting was added near the entrances to guide visitors to the main hall while enhancing the overall atmosphere. Sustainability was a key consideration: the renovation achieved approximately 70% energy savings through a new climate control system, and circular, durable materials were carefully selected.

Reopening with comfort, character, and environmental consideration
The NBC welcomed its first guests on 1 March 2024, with a festive reopening on 8 March. The renovation significantly improved the visitor experience through higher ceilings, wider circulation spaces and enhanced acoustics. Guests now benefit from a quieter environment, while organisers experience a technically and aesthetically balanced building.
The improvements are also noticeable in the surrounding area. The combination of acoustic insulation, modern door systems and sustainable installations ensures a future-proof congress centre, demonstrating how aesthetics, safety and acoustic performance can be successfully combined in a contemporary venue.
