Living alongside a busy motorway requires smart solutions. For the new Canvas Living development in Rotterdam, we designed custom-made façade grilles that let fresh air in while keeping traffic noise out. This creates a healthy and comfortable living environment right in the heart of the city.
Noise control at Enexis’ transformer station

A power grid under pressure calls for a quiet force
In Gennep, a town in the North Limburg region of the Netherlands, the electricity grid was reaching its limits. A growing demand for power, combined with an increase in local renewable energy generation, led to structural grid congestion. As the regional grid operator, Enexis faced a significant challenge: the transformer station had to be upgraded to safeguard the reliability of the power supply and prepare for future demand.
But expanding capacity often comes with a downside. One of them is increased noise, especially in areas close to residential neighbourhoods.
This is where the journey begins: how do you combine technical innovation with the quality of life of the surrounding community?
A technical, acoustic and social transformation
The core of the upgrade was increased capacity: two ageing 40MVA transformers were replaced with more powerful 80/100MVA units. This expansion relieves pressure on the local network and allows for future growth and peaks in energy returned to the grid, for example from solar installations. However, higher capacity often results in higher noise levels.Working with acoustic engineering firm Peutz, Enexis mapped out the noise challenges. The conclusion was clear: mitigation was essential. Merford was brought in to design and deliver suitable acoustic and ventilation solutions.
Before construction began, local residents were actively involved in the planning process. During consultations, they had input on several aspects including the appearance of the buildings. While blue is typically the standard colour, the community requested green to better blend with the natural surroundings. This choice contributes to a calmer visual presence and greater harmony with the local landscape.
The technical solution had three main components:
- The concrete façades of the transformer enclosures were replaced with SKS100 panels: sound-insulating wall elements with a closed exterior and a sound-absorbing interior.
- Ventilation openings were equipped with custom IXKA silencers and external air grilles, allowing for proper airflow while minimising noise transmission.
- Access to the transformers is provided through two M53 external doors, equipped with integrated sound insulation and vibration damping.
This combination of technical precision and social consideration resulted in a solution that is both functional and sensitive to its surroundings.

A quieter, compliant and future-ready transformer station
With the renewed installation operational in 2025, the Gennep transformer station is ready for the future. The new transformers provide sufficient capacity to handle regional demand and absorb peak feed-ins from decentralised energy sources.
Thanks to Merford’s acoustic measures, that growth remains virtually silent for those living nearby. The technical systems do their job, while residents experience little to no disruption.
This project highlights how technological progress, sustainability, and liveability can go hand in hand when you look beyond performance alone.
