Integrated cooling with minimal noise impact

Spijkerman Prefab Solutions approached Merford to develop a solution for their prefabricated fibre distribution units for KPN. These so-called Point of Presence (PoP) stations distribute fibre optic connections to residential areas. The equipment within these stations, including the associated fans, generates noise that can be perceived as disturbing in the immediate surroundings. The challenge was therefore clear: to develop an integrated solution that ensures effective cooling while reducing noise levels.

Close collaboration for a custom-made solution

The development process started in 2020, when Spijkerman was commissioned to deliver the distribution units fully turnkey, including installation and transport. At that time, not all required components were available on the market. In close collaboration, both parties explored how to develop a suitable solution. The project built on existing cooperation, where Merford M-series doors were already used to provide secure access to PoP stations. Together, the technical specifications and requirements were defined.

This resulted in a customer-specific solution: the VLK4000 free-air cooling unit. The system moves at least 4,000 m³ of air and combines ventilation with effective noise attenuation. Glass wool and rock wool are integrated into the construction to provide acoustic absorption and insulation. Noise-reducing façade grilles limit sound emission to the surrounding area. A dummy grille is also integrated, allowing an additional free-air cooling unit to be installed easily in the future. This keeps the solution flexible and scalable.

Close cooperation between different departments within Merford enabled efficient production and assembly at the facility in Gorinchem.

Efficient, quiet, and sustainable

With the VLK4000, Spijkerman has a fully integrated cooling solution that minimises noise disturbance. This allows PoP stations to be installed in residential areas without impacting the living environment.

By opting for free-air cooling instead of traditional air conditioning, an energy-efficient solution has been realised. The materials used are recyclable and produced in the Netherlands, reducing transport distances and environmental impact.

This project demonstrates how technical functionality, noise control and sustainability can be successfully combined in one integrated solution.

Behind the project

Merford goes beyond the possibilities of their production facility. They think along with what is needed to provide our clients with the best solution. Together, we really search for the ideal answer. It is a combination of engineering, creating the total solution, and delivering the product
