Living alongside a busy motorway requires smart solutions. For the new Canvas Living development in Rotterdam, we designed custom-made façade grilles that let fresh air in while keeping traffic noise out. This creates a healthy and comfortable living environment right in the heart of the city.
Noise Reduction at Van Gogh Village Museum

Noise Disturbance Required Immediate Action
Initially, enclosing the heat pumps was not part of the plan. However, when local residents began experiencing noise disturbance, the need arose for a fast and effective solution. Merford was asked to develop an approach that would be both acoustically effective and practical in use.
Following approval of a basic design, the concept was further optimised. Within the same budget, improved acoustic performance was achieved without compromising accessibility for maintenance and operation.
Engineering a custom outdoor solution
The solution consists of a custom-designed enclosure, with design, production and installation delivered as an integrated process. The enclosure effectively reduces noise from the heat pumps, while ensuring the installation remains fully accessible for inspection and servicing.
Production was carried out in-house, allowing materials and execution to be precisely aligned with the site conditions and the museum’s requirements. This integrated approach enabled efficient realisation and reliable acoustic performance.

Restored Comfort for Residents
With the new enclosure in place, noise disturbance for nearby residents has been eliminated, while the installation remains safe and accessible. The project demonstrates how targeted optimisation and close collaboration lead to solutions that effectively respond to both technical and environmental needs.
The Van Gogh Village Museum now benefits from a quiet, functional and maintainable installation that supports both the visitor experience and the quality of the surrounding living environment.
