STS (Ship-to-Shore) cranes, or QC cranes, are a worldwide phenomenon and indispensable in the transfer of containers from ship to container terminal, where the container in a subsequent stage is picked up by different equipment for stacking. Container ships are becoming larger and are capable of transporting an increasingly larger number of containers. The cranes that unload these ships will have to accommodate this increased capacity. Merford has set as its objective to ensure that the operator always has a safe operator cabin that is independent of a dynamic sector.
Changing sector; stable operator cabin
An STS operator is generally expected to work with high precision and at an effective pace. An operator cabin that actively contributes to meeting these requirements therefore is not an undeserved luxury for the operator. Merford’s STS operator cabin was developed and fitted up with due consideration to its ultimate application and circumstances. QC, RTG and checker cabins for Port of Oslo
Oslo is the location of the largest container port in Norway: The Port of Oslo. This port handles a total of 210,000 TEUs per year. To be able to meet the growing demand, the port’s annual capacity will be doubled over the coming years. New RTG and STS cranes will be acquired to realise this goal. Konecranes and Cargotec were contracted by the Port of Oslo to construct these cranes, each equipped with a Merford cabin.
Operator cabins installed in Khalifa port in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Emirates, has a new harbour terminal that has seen huge growth in recent years. It concerns the Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone, which is being worked on in five phases until 2030. The Abu Dhabi Port Company is one of the users and asked Merford in 2011 to deliver six operator cabins for STS cranes.
