            Energy & Offshore

            Energy & Offshore

Gas, oil and electricity have to be brought to our homes, offices and factories from land, sea or windmill parks. But the extraction and distribution of gas and oil makes noise. And this also applies to the generation, distribution and storage of electricity. Furthermore, these activities are quite risky and it is important for operators to benefit from a healthy, ergonomic and therefore efficient work environment. Merford provides measures that limit the noise and risks inherent in these sectors.

            Power supply
Electricity quietly enters our homes, but the transformers, turbines, steam-turbines and compressors that make this possible are guaranteed to make noise. These machines are often located in quiet areas. At Merford Noise Control we supply sound insulating housings or other turnkey solutions designed to control noise. Merford Special Doors is responsible for safety related to access engineering. For example, we supply burglarproof, fireproof and sound insulating doors. We also supply grills, for example, for transformer housings and switch-rooms.

            Oil & Gas
Safe doors are essential in the extraction of oil and gas. For example, Merford Special Doors supplies fireproof and explosion-proof doors according to specifications, combined with sound insulation. Or watertight doors for use in offshore situations. Noisy machines and installations are used for the storage and distribution of oil and gas. Merford naturally also supplies soundproof solutions to control the noise made by compressors and pumps.

            Offshore: comfortable cabins
The processes in any offshore situation are dangerous. The cabin operator’s task is a difficult one and operators consequently deserve an optimal work environment. At Merford we ensure this is the case. Our cabins are ergonomic and safe, enabling operators to work comfortably and therefore more efficiently. Naturally we make sure that our cabins fully comply with the applicable standards and values in the offshore industry.

              SmartGlass

Merford champions work environments in which health and safety for everyone is the norm. Crane operators also deserve to have access to the right resources to make their work more comfortable. The sun can be an important factor in this respect. The sun's reflection on the water often makes it impossible for the operator to do his/her work without squinting. Merford, in collaboration with Vision Systems and SPD-SmartGlass, is working on an effective solution: dimmable glass.

Sight line study for operator cabins

Employee efficiency, safety, and health. These are aspects that play an increasingly important role in harbours, heavy lifting, and heavy industries. An ergonomic work environment for an operator can contribute a lot to these aspects. To achieve this, an operator must be able to see his work area without physical stress. A sightline study provides a solution.

              Roof window test Merford Cabins

Merford has, in collaboration with organization for certifications TÜV, tested the roof windows of her Ecocab and Sennebogen port cab. The roof grid of the Ecocab is tested as well. The objects were tested with a falling 7 kg-steel ball thrown from a 2 meter height. After a succesfull completion of the test, the windows and grid meet the requirements of the EN 13852-2: 2004 and EN 13000: 2010 standards for offshore and mobile cranes. Westland Infra

A transformer station owned by Westland Infra Netbeheer in the Dutch town of Poeldijk has recently been fitted with an Active Noise Reduction (ANR) system. This makes use of a technology which is also known as anti-noise. There were plans to build new houses close to the transformer station so the transformer station had to meet certain noise requirements. Merford was asked to find a way to reduce the noise pollution levels to a maximum of 40 dB, at a distance of 21 metres on the side of the station where the houses were to be built. An ANR solution was developed to be installed in the transformer station so the sound emissions were reduced to the required levels.

On behalf of ELMA, Merford has produced a custom-made cabin for the Solitaire owned by Allseas, one of the largest pipelaying vessels in the world. Pipes are welded together on this type of vessel, after which they are lowered to the bottom of the sea as a single unit, and carefully laid down in the right position. Based on a line of sight analysis, Merford developed and produced the most ideal cabin based on the characteristics of the crane and the ship. The cabin is equipped with various innovations that enable to operator to work more efficiently and which enhance his safety.

The Saipem 7000 is the second largest crane vessel in the world and is primarily used as a lifting workhorse for drilling platforms. The ship has several special characteristics. The vessel is not only almost 200 metres long and more than 80 metres wide, it also houses two large cranes, each capable of lifting 7,000 tonnes. Merford was involved in the replacement of two cabins for the main cranes, as well as the smaller contento cranes and the helideck.
